Dickie Bird's return to Chelmsford was a huge success.
More than 500 fans queued to meet the umpiring legend when he visited Ottakars in the High Street to sign the paperback edition of his book White Cap and Bails.
Book seller Carl Nurse said: "He seemed more interested in asking his fans questions than talking about himself.
"When he left after a marathon three-hour signing session he was absolutely shattered and had aching hands."
