The recent wet weather forced Rochford Ladies to play their Essex Centenary Stableford competition over 14 holes but that did not stop club champion Jo Rumsey continuing her recent rich vein of form.

Jo ran out a comfortable overall winner with 30 points which was also good enough to take the Silver section ahead of Jackie Waghorn (28) and Rosemary Sykes (27).

Bronze success went to Sue Clarke with 28 points - three better than Pat Gage with Sue Packer was third on 24.

Roy George is No 1 at Rochford

In windy and sodden conditions Southend played their November medal.

Roy George proved that his game is adaptable to all weathers with a gross 78-12=66 to win the senior section.

Second spot went to future vice-captain Ray Threadgold who played some excellent golf to finish 79-12=67. This beat Lee Winsor and Paul Downey on countback.

In the junior section new member A Fisher stormed round in 91. Playing off 28, he produced five pars and three birdies for top spot with a net 63.

In second place was Cliff Mills (83-15=68) to nudge out Dave Seymour on countback over the last three holes.

It's no joke with Whale and Mace

Belfairs' men held an aggregate four ball Stableford with the two Bobs, Whale and Mace, who played in the best of the conditions, triumphing.

The course was open, despite being waterlogged in parts, and the pair took advantage of the form they showed earlier in the week when playing a successful round.

Their 38 points on the way out were significant and, despite a disappointing return 31, their total of 69 was enough for victory.

Club captain Glen Bremerman, in his last week in that role, played with his predecessor Jerry Daven-port.

They managed 35 points on the more open front nine, but will rue the two bad holes on the way back. This cost them vital points and saw them on 32 on the way in. Their total of 67 left them two behind the Bobs.

Four pairs finished on 64 points with Bernie Walker and Paul Sicheri running out top pair on countback.

The club would like to express its condolences to club professional Martin Foreman and his family following the loss of his wife the previous week.

Members throughts are with them at this difficult time.

Bab's Cup of cheer

Thorpe Hall Ladies played the Ina Cameron Cup, a two clubs and putter competition, which was won by Barbara Knowles on 28 points.

Second was Pat Tyrer on 26 and Mary Burkett (25). Sixty-one members entered the competition in wet and cold conditions with only 15 holes being open.

However, it was a bonus for members to get into action after all the recent bad weather.

Before rain caused the course to be closed again the ladies played a nine-hole Stableford draw. Winner on 17 points was Anna Leslie, beating Helen Morgan on countback. Barbara Ridgwell was third with 15 points.

A knight to remember

New Ballards Gore Ladies captain Penny Emberton-Brooks arrived for her driving-in ceremony at the Canewdon club mounted on her trusted steed as Queen Clubalot with her faithful squire Sir Caddy.

The weather was crisp and bright despite bracing winds. Her chosen charity is Take Heart, to whom all money raised from the drive-in will be sent.
