The woman expecting the triplets of gay Chelmsford couple Barrie Drewitt and Tony Barlow was involved in a "horrific" car crash in America, a family friend said.
The un-named surrogate mum is due to give birth to the couple's children in the New Year.
Millionaires Mr Barlow and Mr Drewitt, of Bicknacre Road, Danbury, already have twins Aspen and Saffron from another surrogate mother.
