Unscrupulous "cowboys" posing as bona fide workmen are targeting homeowners in the Rettendon and South Woodham area.

Essex Trading Standards has issued the warning after reports of people claiming to be highway contractors with spare materials operating in the area around the Rettendon Turnpike roadworks on the A130.

David Westcott, cabinet member for environmental management and trading standards at Essex County Council, said: "Genuine highway companies never have any tarmac left over. Don't be fooled.

"Cowboy workmen can appear to be convincing and say they do your drive on the cheap.

"However, it is highly likely that the work will be shoddy, the final price extortionate and they could use intimidation to get payment."

Trading standards officers are urging residents to call them on 01245 341888 or the police to report anything suspicious or if they are intimidated.
