A new advice and information centre has been launched by the Chelmsford Crossroads Care Attendant Scheme to give practical and emotional support to carers of all ages.

The centre, at 123 New London Road, Chelmsford, was officially opened in a ceremony carried out by the borough's Mayor, Cllr Christopher Stephenson.

The charity decided to establish the centre after seeking the views of people who care for someone at home with a physical disability, chronic illness or learning difficulty.

Funding has been provided by Essex Social Services under the new carers grant.

Chelmsford Crossroads chairman Marion Ward said: ''We found that many carers felt totally isolated, being effectively housebound and had no single point to go for information on what services were available.

"Many also felt that, as experienced carers, they had useful advice which could be passed on to others.

"After providing support to carers in their homes in the Chelmsford area for 18 years, we are delighted to be in a position to extend our services."

The advice and information centre is open Mondays to Thursdays from 9.30 am to 4 pm and on Fridays from 9.30 am to 2.30 pm.

The advice line number is 01245 263300.
