New Year's Eve rail travel is set to be easier than First thought - Liverpool Street station is to remain open longer than planned.

Railtrack intended to shut the busy station on four additional days over the holiday period, aside from the usual closures.

Now it will only close on two extra days, easing the nightmare facing commuters and partygoers.

The closures are needed for Railtrack to carry out works, including rerailing on the First Great Eastern and Anglia Railways lines.

However, problems with supplies means only 12 signal points out of the planned 56 will be replaced.

Less work means Liverpool Street can stay open to limited services on December 30 and January 1.

It was originally planned to close Liverpool Street on Christmas Eve, December 30, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day as well as seasonal closures on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Peter Maynard, spokesman for Railtrack, said: "Great Eastern and Anglia lines will now be open into Liverpool Street on December 30 and January 1."
