Basildon's economy has been dealt another blow with one of the town's biggest employers announcing more than 50 job cuts.

York International in Gardiners Lane is the third company in the dictrict within the past week to make staff redundant - bringing the total jobs lost to more than 250.

The engineering firm employs 550 people and although nobody there was available for comment today (Tuesday), it is believed York International staff have been asked to volunteer for redundancy.

The firm makes industrial air conditioning systems.

Last week more than 100 jobs vanished at freight forwarding firm Ontime Logistics in Hovefields Avenue when KPMG were appointed administrative receivers of parent company Fastrack.

Workers at Wickford business PCI Services which packages drugs for the pharmaceuticals industry were also asked to volunteer for redundancy as part of a cost-cutting initiative.
