A list of approved builders and tradesmen could be available in Tendring - if a national pilot scheme proves successful.

Disabled Peter Hayns, 51, who lives in Clacton, called for a register to be set up after twice being caught out with work at his home.

One was for repairs to his roof and the second occasion involved work on his bathroom.

He wrote to Tendring Council asking if it could set up a register of reliable firms, which householders could consult.

"Especially with the large number of elderly people in the area, I feel it would be very useful and stop people being duped by cowboys," he said.

He approached Tendring councillor Roy Smith, who took the matter up with the chief executive. Mr Smith said he was very encouraged by the response.

Mr Smith said that he has been informed that there is a pilot scheme in operation with two councils.

"The purpose is to identify quality builders and set up a list available to householders who need repairs maintenance or building work," he said.

"Builders who get on the list will get a quality mark stamp of approval and if successful I believe the intention is to have it adopted elsewhere."

Mr Smith added that he hoped that would include Tendring - should the pilot prove worthwhile.
