Angry bus passengers in Jaywick look set to win their battle to retain part of their service which was taken away by First Eastern National.

Changes came into effect last month which meant people in Clacton, Jaywick, Frinton and Walton all had to put up with major route cutbacks.

Inquiry offices were swamped with complaints over the timetables and claims that passengers were not given sufficient notice.

Harwich MP Ivan Henderson was asked to step in over the problems caused to residents.

Now Essex county and Tendring councillor Roy Smith, who represents Jaywick, has taken the matter up with Essex County Council.

And Ron Williams, cabinet member dealing with transport, is trying to sort out community transport to run a pick-up service for the elderly in that area.

"I have a large number of letters and calls on this and there are a lot of people in my area who are suffering because of the cuts," he said.

"They are being deprived and some are virtually housebound by the lack of a bus and no alternative means of transport. These are some of the most vulnerable people."

First Eastern National said the changes were needed to make routes commercially viable. The company felt that four buses an hour between Jaywick and Walton was more than the revenue taken could support.
