Chelmsford Athletics Club Veterans turned out in force at the weekend for the Eastern Veterans Cross Country Championships.

In conditions more suited to swimming than running the team returned home with a haul of medals.

First home for the men was David Griffin, who also won the event last year, taking the Over 45 title.

He was followed home by Chris Purse, Peter Tullett and Roger Woodley making Chelmsford the first Male Over 40 team.

They were well supported by Barry Thorpe, Geoff Green, Dave Wigmore and Stuart Cowan.

In the Male Over 55 the race was won by John Hush with Phil Harris second, with Jim Sayers making a useful return to competition after a long injury the team picked up bronze in the Over 50 category.

Two other winners for Chelmsford were Charlie Ross in the Over 60 race and Team Manager Arthur Tullett in the Over 70 race.

It was also a successful day for the ladies with Sarah Stark finishing second overall to take the Over 35 title and Hazel Cybyk taking second in the Over 35 race for the second successive year.

Tracey Minton won the Over 40 race, after winning the Over 35 race last year and Ruth O'Sullivan was third.

With such outstanding performances it came as no surprise when the team of Stark, Minton and O'Sullivan won the Womens Team Race.

The women were so strong that they also came second in the team event with Cybyk being joined by Claire St John-Coleman and Elspeth Missen.

Jenny Grainger also ran well, illustrating the strength of the womens team by finishing just behind Ruth O'Sullivan.

Leading man: Chelmsford Athletic Clubs' Dave Griffin, who won the Over 45s title for the second successive year, at the Eastern Veterans Cross Country Championships.
