A bomb-type device was left in a Colchester art gallery.
The burglar alarm went off at the Minories gallery on East Hill at 12.17am on Friday. Police investigating found an incendiary device in the main gallery.
Officers also found fireworks on the floor.
Det Sgt Roger Napier, of Colchester police, said: "It appears that the art gallery has been broken into with the aim to cause damage, rather than to steal anything, as nothing was taken.
"We are investigating but First reports suggest a couple of fireworks were left along with an incendiary device."
Firstsite, which runs the Minories gallery, declined to comment. The current exhibition at the gallery is showcasing art created in schools all across Colchester.
