Police and publicans in Colchester are joining forces to combat the date-rape drug menace.

The Essex force is already training specialist officers countywide after a woman was attacked in Chelmsford after a tranquilising drug was slipped into her drink.

Now members of Colchester's Pubwatch, who run the town's pubs and clubs, are to be taught how to detect and prevent people falling prey to such sex attacks with drugs like Rohypnol.

Colchester police and Pubwatch are organising a presentation to members by the Date Rape Association.

PC Steve Casey, of Colchester police's town team, said: "In Southend, they are having a lot of problems with cocaine and ketamine being mixed.

"Here in Colchester, we have had some people coming forward saying their drinks had gone a strange colour or had a strange taste, but at present we have not had any reported incidents of indecent assault or rape.

"That is not to say it is not happening - it might not be being reported."

Mike Weber, Pubwatch chairman and Hippodrome club manager, said: "We are looking to gain as much information and education in date rape drugs and their effects and methods of prevention.

"We want to make sure we are giving the best service to our patrons to ensure they are in a safe environment.

"I don't think we have had any incidents in Colchester, but prevention is better than cure."

He added: "If people have been given the drug, all the licensees should be able to spot that and know how to deal with it.

"We will be putting in search procedures to hopefully stop it getting into premises as well."
