A mother has told how she "got goosepimples" after seeing her son "hit" by a car in a shocking Government commercial designed to cut speed on Britain's roads.

Lee Henry, of Church Street, Grays, appears in the new advertisement which shows graphically how speeding can lead to tragic consequences.

Although the ten-year-old's mother Tracy is proud of her son and the advert, she said the careful editing makes it very lifelike which is "quite shocking".

She said: "I got goosepimples the first time I watched it. It sent a shiver down my spine, but I do think it brings across the message really well."

Lee, who has witnessed his best friend being knocked down in a car accident, is seen walking into the road where a car is travelling at 35mph.

He is then replaced by a dummy which is hurled into the air before hitting the road.

Lee said: "It is really strange watching yourself being run over! I think it will make drivers and children think."

The advert, only shown after 7pm because the content may be disturbing for younger viewers, has been adopted by Government ministers in response to the high number of child deaths on the road.

Last year 107 children were killed and 5,000 seriously hurt in car accidents, a figure which is hoped will considerably reduce with the campaign.

Making a point - Lee Henry, right, in the ad which shows how speeding can lead to tragedy, and left, his normal guise
