The widow of millionaire Tony Fetherston has said she was "very pleased" to hear reports a man had been charged in connection with her husband's death.

Tony Fetherston, 67, was shot at his luxury home on the West Indian island of St Kitts by a gunman demanding money.

The incident happened in January last year but a hunt has failed to catch the person responsible.

Now police have charged Joseph Hazel, of Basseterre, the capital of St Kitts and Nevis, with Mr Fetherston's killing.

Margaret Fetherston, 63, welcomed the news.

She said yesterday (Monday): "I was officially told at 8.30pm on Friday. It's been an agonising time. It is good that they have got someone but it's not going to bring Tony back. And, of course, it's not over yet."

She added: "It is something of a relief after a traumatic few months. I always had faith the police would see it through."

Mr Fetherston was a former Royal Air Force pilot and retired shipping industry executive who kept a holiday home on the outskirts of Basseterre. He had been spending winters on the island for 15 years.

His death shocked communities in Frinton and Walton, where Mr Fetherston was well-known, especially among the yachting fraternity.

The breakthrough in the case followed the intervention of a British policewoman, who helped with the inquiry while on a netball tour in the Caribbean.
