West Chelmsford MP Simon Burns says he will back Haltemprice MP, David Davis, in the Conservative Party leadership contest.

Tory MPs will ballot for a short list of two candidates - of the present total of five - which will then be put to party members for the final decision.Mr Burns said: "I have decided that I will support David Davis in the balloting for the short list of candidates for the Conservative Party leadership.

"Not only is he a personal friend of mine, but I also believe he has the vision to steer the party in the right direction to draw up policies on vital issues like health, education, the economy, etc, that would be relevant to the aims and aspirations of the vast majority of voters in this country."

Mr Burns held on to his job as treasurer of the Conservative 1922 committee last week, defeating challenger Peter Viggers MP.
