A respected official at the Crompton Coward Angling Club died while fishing at the weekend.

Brian Williams, long-time match secretary and was membership secretary, died on the bank at the weekend, at one of his club's fishing matches.

He will be sadly missed by many.

The club has asked anyone wishing to make a donation to his widow's fund, should send cheques or postal orders to Norman Beatwell, 22 Arnhem Road, Chelmsford CM1 2EW

Good weights at Rayne Lodge

At Rayne Lodge, Braintree, the Wednesday match was fished on the Top and Middle Lakes and saw some good weights.

The winner was Frank Thomas of Wickford Angling Centre with 80-11-0. Second was Steve Fenton, (Simpson's of Turnford) with 67-6-0 and third place was taken by Graham Dack, Image 17, 57-2-0.

Fourth place went to Richard Martin (Daiwa Dorking) who netted 52-2-0. Mickey Hood from Image Bromages came fifth with 49-12-0 and sixth was Bernie Frazer from Ton Up Bait with 48-15-0.

The evening match was fished on the top lake and Frank Thomas of Wickford Angling Centre, showed his win during the day was no fluke as he topped the ranks again with his weight of 80-14-0.

Second was Malcolm Banks with 73-8-0, Dale Smith of Trent Tackle, was third with 72-13-0, fourth Richard Martin, Daiwa Dorking, had 63-1-0 fifth place was taken by Steve Fenton, Simpson's of Turnford, with 57-12-0, Peter Binks was sixth with his weight of 44-0-0.

Rods and Sods places available

Cox busy at Wagtail

Wagtail Lake saw Steve Cox from Harold Hill get amongst the carp last week with a hectic session which saw him bank a 17lb, 14, 13, 12 and an 8lb carp (he also had three tench and the biggest was over 3lb.

British Army Angling Society's Vic Page won their latest match on the Horseshoe Lake with a weight of 30-3-0.

Second was Pete Foreman with 29-13-0, Pete Emery took third place with his weight of 25-14-0 and fourth was Sandy Turner with his weight of 25-4-0.

Legion match needed more anglers

At Central Park, Chelmsford, the Royal British Legion Open match was raising funds for the National Poppy Appeal fund and could have done with better support.

The winner was Tony Bilson of RHPAA with 12-0-0, second was Jeff Green with 5-14-8, third was Vic Dadd 4-12-0 and fourth was Nigel Williams (RHPAA) with 3-6-0.

Better luck at Tiptree

At Brookhall Fishery, Tiptree, the normal Saturday weather jinx stayed away for the latest match and let the anglers go for the fish, which had come up in the water.

The winner from peg 14 was Steve Barnes (VDE) who netted 21 carp on pellet for his weight of 81-0-0. Second was Gary Pearce of Brookhall, with 76-8-0, third place was taken by Mick Godfrey, of Viscount Ipswich Wasp's, with a eight of 63-8-0, fourth was the Bromages Club's Paul Nixon with 57-8-0.

The fishery has no matches on this weekend and will be open for pleasure anglers to go and beat the match-men at their own game.

The Cliff Birch Memorial Match at Magpie Lake had a field of 28 anglers and produced the weights to justify the turnout.

Brian Klean from Waterbeach Angling Society had the winning weight with 87-4-0, second was Andy Howard, Trent Tackle, with his weight of 50-8-0 and third spot fell to Dave Carter 46-12-0.

Fourth was Brentwood Angling Centre's Johnny Hunt with 42-12-0, fifth was Dan Gleeson, Waterbeach Angling Society, with 35-8-0 and sixth spot was taken by Mick Vincent (Browning A1).

The Essex Inter Club League fished on Silver End and Seabrooks Lakes had seven teams fishing in this match and the individual winner was Paul Connell (CAPSB), with a weight 29-7-0.

Close behind in second was Andy Moss, (Kelvedon AC) with 29-3-0, Simon Colclough (CAPS, Team B) was third with his 27-2-0 and fourth place went to Colin Moran, Billericay Angling Club B team; he had 23-4-0.

Fifth place fell to John Aylin (Billericay B) with 19-5-0 and sixth place was taken by Paxmans' G Collingworth with 18-9-0.

This left the overall league places as follows: (1st) Kelvedon 28 points, joint second were Billericay A and Paxmans both with 27 points, (4th) was CAPSB with 25 points, Chelmsford Angling Club with 21 were fifth, sixth was CAPSA also with 21 points but less weight overall and seventh was Billericay B with 19 points.

Carp keen at Fennes

At Fennes Fishery, Braintree, the big carp are starting to feed on this fishery. Colchester angler, Colin Goss had a 22-8-0 common on a floater plus 15 other carp when he fished at the Ash Grounds fishery.

Braintree's Robert Percival, was fishing on the Hobbs Croft Lake and managed to hook into a 9-0-0 carp on free-lined luncheon meat, he also had a 3-8-0 tench by the same method.

Barlett's jackpot

Pitsea angler, Anton Barlett, his the jackpot at Gloucester Park, Basildon, by landing a fabulous 50lb plus haul of tench.

He also had a few small carp and some quality roach.

He targeted the eastern end of the island fishing a waggler with luncheon meat bait, which produced a bite, every cast.

Hitting the bites in the sunny conditions proved a problem and Bartlett missed a lot of fish which had he hooked he reckoned that he would have easily had over 100lb.

Fishing the Bear Pit swim, Brian Bayley netted more than 30lb of roach in his 50lb plus haul. Using pellet and fishing on a pole he netted fish throughout the day.

Park regular, Dave Hemmings, netted at 125lb haul when he fished the eastern end of the island. Dave then fished luncheon meat baits for this haul, which included tench, roach and crucian carp.

Anglers breaming at Northlands

There was some tremendous bags of bream for the penultimate match in the Tony Chessman's Colmic sponsored Evening League match at Northlands Park in Basildon.

The winner was Simon Holder, (Wickford Angling Centre), with ten bream and a tench and using a quiver tip he netted 29-11-0.

Second spot went to Graham Hyde, (Simano JP Tackle, Maldon) who fished the Caf swim and weighed in 27-8-0 with his eight bream, a crucian carp and an eel.

Third was another Wickford Angling Centre man, Peter Steward; he fished from the causeway and landed seven bream and a tench of 4lb for his total of 22-8-0.

Fourth place went to series leader Richard Martin with 15-1-0.

The best catch of the week fell to Steve Connor who fished in the Christmas Tree swim and took a 70lb, using quiver tip and worm bait.

He had 17 bream plus a carp of 17-2-0 and a few small roach and skimmers, he also lost a bigger carp which smashed his 2lb hook length after a 35-minute battle.

The two best fish of the week fell to Roy Green who had a specimen carp of 19-12-0 from Northlands and Seay Backhurst netted a 15lb common.
