First league match is a scorcher

The first match in the Trent Tackle Summer League took place on Sunday, in baking hot conditions on the Maldon Canal, Heybridge.

Sixty anglers took part, both individually, and as part of 10 teams of six anglers.

At Northlands Park, Basildon, Peter Steward of Wickford Angling Centre took 47-3-0 in three hours to win the latest match in the Northlands Park Evening Series, sponsored by Tony Cheeseman's Colmic. He fished the caf lake, using worm and maggot bait with quivertip tactics, and landed fourteen bream and two small skimmers to finish well ahead of the other anglers.

Second place went to Alan Halsey with 26-7-0, which would normally be more than enough to take the honours. Alan fished by the Christmas tree in the caf lake to land his ten bream and three skimmers, again with worm and maggot present on a quivertip. Kevin Phillips fished a pole to take third place with 14-14-0. He fished from the outside of the caf lake to land a bream of 4-10-0, a tench and various skimmers.

Gloucester Park, Basildon regular Mark Acton took his first ever 100lb plus haul this week after a good session by the incoming sluices. He started his day free-lining sinking bread flake under the tree.

This produced a string of big carp up to 19lbs, and this disturbed the bigger fish, causing Mark to change to light pole tactics. Fishing with luncheon meat under a small dibber float, he continued to keep the fish coming, totalling an amazing 108lbs haul. This area also proved lucky for Chris Cooper,14, and his friend, 15-year-old Lee Watkins.

The duo fished waggler tactics alternating between sweetcorn and single red maggot baits, between them netting numerous tench and roach, and a decent carp.

Lake Meadows, Billericay continues to produce some excellent carp, with a fish of 23-12-0 for Nick Farrow. He fished the boathouse hedge to take a personal best mirror carp from a lump of cheese.

Charlotte Towse, 11, has landed two big carp on consecutive trips to Lake Meadows.

Her first visit produced a mirror of 15-8-0 to a tiger nut boilie, with a further mirror of 15lbs taken with a pineapple pop-up on her next visit. Her sister Cathy, also landed several bream, while their father, Raymond, who did their casting, blanked on his own rods!
