Matt follows in father's footsteps

At the age of 13, Matt Southgate is showing that he has inherited all of his father Ian's golfing talent.

Ian has been a very successful golfer at Thorpe Hall, playing a major role in the club's successes and being 2000/01 Thornton Cup team captain.

Not to be outdone, Matt is now playing off a handicap to match his age, having been cut from 19 following an incredible weekend's golf where he scored 48 Stableford points over an 18-hole competition.

Father and son Joe (net 66) and Mark (67) Hibbitt won the top two spots in this weekend's Frank Allen qualifying competition.

The top eight in both, the senior and junior handicap divisions, go forward to a 16-man knockout event.

Despite Paul King's 5 and 4 win over Nick Pledger, a first class performance, Thorpe went down 3-1 to West Essex in the fifth round of the Mail on Sunday knockout competition.

King not only had a 100 per cent performance in all rounds played, but as anchor man he went on to triumph in three nail-biting play-offs.

The other results saw Sam Johnson lose 2 down to Andy Bloomer with John Jarvis being beaten 3 and 2 by Roger Goldie. Nick Taylor was dormie three over Steve Hoes when Thorpe Hall conceded the match.

McEvoy on course

Thorpe Hall's Richard McEvoy strengthened his bid for a Walker Cup spot with seventh place in the Welsh Open strokeplay championship last weekend.

He finished on 279, nine under par, after rounds of 70, 69, 68 and 72 at the course in Maesdu, Llandudno.

The performance boosts his bid to claim a place in the Walker Cup team to face the Americans in amateur golf's equivalent of the Ryder Cup. That match takes place in August.

The winner was Middlesbrough's J Lupton, with newly-crowned Essex Amateur champion Ricky Blaxill (Wanstead) fourth on 275.

Visor still upfor grabs

The US Masters sun visor, personally autographed by nine former Augusta champions including Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Tom Watson, failed to reach its reserve price of £800 at the auction following Boyce Hill's charity day.

Anyone interested in snapping up this once in a lifetime piece of golfing memorabilia should phone Dick Marshall on the Echo sport desk at 01268 469403 and details will be passed on. Half the money raised will go to top British star Sandy Lyle's chosen charity Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital, as he donated the much-prized visor.

Whitworth and Pitt pull it off

Castle Point Golf Club held its Combination Cup competition with three pairs competitions being staged against the par of the course.

The morning 18 holes is a foursome format playing of 7/16th of combined handicaps, the second afternoon 18 holes is a greensomes format (3/8th combined handicaps) with the total scores of the day's 36 holes deciding the overall winners.

In the morning round, S. Pitt (8) and D. Whitworth (6) played some superb golf to convincingly claim the foursomes salver with a score of +4.

Second place went to M. Goodwin (5) and A McIntyre (5) on -3.

The afternoon greensomes competition saw A. Worthington (7) and C. Monks (13) lift the greensomes salver with a score of +3 ahead of second place G. Loveday (7) and D. Marney (6) on +1.

Pitt and Whitworth were the Combination Cup winners.

Wright man for the job

Three-handicapper John Wright won the Lady Captain's Day Stableford after a close finish at Basildon.

The competition was decided on countback after Wright and Roger Cook both finished on 41 points.

Derek Entwistle was a point behind with Steve Biebuyck next on 39.

Basildon ladies continued their successful run in the NAPGC Whitewebbs Shield with a 4-1 win over Hainault. Daphne Saitch won 2 up while Margaret O'Leary triumphed 3 and 2.

Jane Ashdown triumphed 6 and 5 with Judy Long winning 4 and 3. Eileen Prendergast was beaten 2 down.

Another great win by Basildon's men saw them progress to the zone final of the Clapham Common Shield, organised by by the NAPGC.

They won by 49 points against Risebridge and now meet Royal Epping Forest.
