It's been a mixed week at Basildon's Aquatels with fish of most species making a showing.

Carl Tuffin enjoyed variety fishing from the Oaks to take a 20lb mixed bag of bream, tench and roach using pellets and sweetcorn.

Ten-year-old Charlie Outen took roach, perch and a 2lb tench from the Essex pool on maggot. Also in the pool Terry Rance caught a 5lb jack pike on a roach deadbait. From the hotel bank Alan Stone took a 4lb bream plus several roach, whilst Sean Mayes caught 2 eels, a 5lb bream and two nice perch during a night session on the beach.

The carp front has been a little slower than last week with Steven Bailey taking a 16lb ghost koi from the beach on Activate bottom baits.

From the hotel bank Darren Chamberlain had a 14lb 8oz mirror using scopex/squid liver.

John Ashton fished popped-up cockle in the Essex Pool to bank a 21lb mirror.

A half-ton for Anton

Pitsea angler Anton Bartlett hit the jackpot at Gloucester Park - landing a fabulous 50lb plus tench haul as well as banking a few small carp and a handful of bigger roach.

Anton targeted the eastern end of the island where his waggler fished luncheon meat produced a bite every cast.

However hitting the shy bites in the bright sunny conditions proved a problem, and Anton missed a lot of fish.

He reckons that he would have had well over a hundred pounds if he had connected with every bite.

Brian Bayley fished the bear pit swim to include more than 30lb of quality roach in a 50lb plus mixed haul. He fished a pole and trout pellet paste bait to keep the fish coming throughout the day.

As well as the big bag of roach, which included fish to almost a pound, Brian netted a dozen tench and a single crucian.

The biggest Gloucester Park bag of the week fell to lake regular Dave Hemmings who netted a 125lb 8oz haul from the Eastern end of the island.

Dave pole fished luncheon meat baits to include carp, tench, roach and crucians in his big catch.

Stanford angler Phil Braddock took a personal best 62lb haul when he fished the Gloucester Park canal stretch.

He started his day fishing caster for the roach, landing a stream of fish to 12oz.

The roach disappeared after he hooked and landed a carp of 12lb 2oz on his pole gear.

A switch to a heavier rig and trout pellet bait produced two more carp and 23 tench.

Hodder's breaming

There were tremendous bags of bream at the penultimate match in Tony Cheeseman's Colmic sponsored Northlands Park Evening series.

The top weight went to Wickford Angling Centre squad member Simon Hodder who weighed in 29lb 11oz.

Simon fished the road lake to land ten bream and a tench on quivertip tactics and worm baits. He also lost four big fish.

Second place went to Graham Hyde who fished the caf lake to weigh in 27lb 8oz.

The J P Tackle Shimano squad member netted eight bream, a crucian, and an eel. Once again quivertip and worm were the successful tactics.

Wickford Angling Centre man Peter Steward took third place with 22lb 8oz.

He fished a swim on the causeway casting into the road lake to land seven bream and a tench of 4lb 5oz.

The last match in the Northlands Park Evening Series takes place tomorrow. Meet in the car park from 5pm for a 5.30pm walk off.

Fishing time will be 6pm to 9pm.

Temperatures tempt Doggetts species

The warm and cloudy start to the week produced perfect conditions for the general fishing at Rochford's Doggetts fishery.

Tench responded well to float fished bread with the back pool producing some excellent fish to around the 5lb mark.

During the slightly cooler spell bream were very much in evidence in the main lake providing some good sport on both float and feeder.

Canvey angler Peter Says float fished double red maggots on the east bank for an evening stint and landed four bream all around 4lb along with two nice tench plus assorted roach, perch and skimmers.

Christopher Genial, of Wickford, lost more tench than he landed on float fished bread from the south bank but still managed around 16lb of fish during his evening session.

Doggetts' carp anglers also started the week well with good fish being taken off the top on floating baits.

Paul Jarvis landed mirrors of 8lb and 14lb on dog biscuit.

Derek Dobbs, of Westcliff, landed a hard fighting 18lb mirror from the north bank during a day session.

New member James Whistin, of Southend, had an excellent session landing mirrors of 19.5lb plus a fully scaled specimen of 15.5lb. Both of his fish came from the north bank.

Flush with success, James returned during the exceptionally hot weather to fish the south bank but failed to land any carp at all.

However, his trip was not in vain as he banked eight decent tench and a single bream.

Fishing with James was pal Arran Berry who lost one big fish but landed a 14.5lb fully scaled mirror.

Hanningfield tops for trout

Trout fishing at Hanningfield Reservoir continues to be excellent.

Both the number of anglers and the quantity of fish caught is well up on the same period last year. During June 4,960 fish were caught by 1,665 anglers.

The average fish weight during June has been 2lb 8oz for rainbow trout.

During June, nine fish over 10lbs were caught including one brown trout.

Conditions round-up: Dark giving action

BEACHES

Most coastlines are fishing slow during the daylight hours.

Sport does tend to pick-up after dark with better numbers of eels being taken along with some obliging school bass.

The Canvey sea wall has been producing bass to 4lb and eels to crab baits, although weed is still a problem.

River Crouch fishing is still good for eels and bass with myself taking three bass to 4.5lb and a lobster from the hole in the wall!

Further afield Gary Pierman fished Dungeness beach Sunday night to take eight sole and lots of good whiting.

SOUTHEND BOATS

Smoothound fishing is superb at the moment with many fish into double figures.

These, coupled with good numbers of roker and bass should make for some frantic action. Shoals of mackeral are also there to be had in the river.

CROUCH BOATS

Good catches again last week despite the weed problem.

Bass to 8lb reported and up to 20 smoothounds per boat - all double figure fish were tagged and returned. Also worthy of note are thornbacks to 10lb with mackeral offshore up to 40 per boat.

SOUTHEND PIER

More mullet from the bays with bass being taken by the specialist angler.

Small numbers of mackeral and garfish are also catchable from the stem along with the odd flounder and eel.

MATCH NEWS

Sunday's Bait and Tackle match saw 15 anglers compete and argue for the spoils - resulting in organiser Ray Power dropping the rest of the matches until September.

Results: 1. Ian Reynolds 3lb 9oz; 2. Alan Gaskin 1lb 12 3/4oz; 3. Ray Jenkins 1lb 12 1/2oz.
