Essex is one of the first county councils in the country to make it easier for sight-impaired students and their families to claim government funding for college and university higher education courses.
Staff from the county's student and pupil financial support service have been working with Steve Carey from the regional transcription service at Anglia Polytechnic University to produce a set of boxed tapes in a Braille cover.
They cover the application process, including eligibility allowances, rules, financial assessment and disability allowances.
Service manager Jenny Jewell, said, "We realise the process for getting help with fees and a maintenance loan may appear complicated for all potential applicants. It is even more challenging for those who are visually impaired.
"We hope this service will help students and their families and bring a reassuring human voice to our service delivery."
The set of cassettes can be borrowed from Susan Wakeling on 01245 245902 or by post from the Student and Pupil Financial Support Service, Essex County Council Learning Services, PO Box 5287, County Hall, Chelmsford, CM1 1LT.
