More places on refresher courses for former teachers interested in brushing up their skills and returning to the classroom are to be provided in teacher training schools all over Essex.
The courses which run from this autumn are part of the nationwide "Those who can, teach" recruitment campaign, funded by the Teacher Training Agency (TTA).
There are 1,800 places available on more than 80 returner courses across the country.
Mary Doherty, TTA head of teacher recruitment and supply, said: "Since we launched the first phase of our returners' campaign in March, the TTA has received over 4,000 enquiries from former teachers about returning to the profession.
"We are delighted that we can now announce extra places on returners' courses in Essex to meet the local demand."
Returners' courses last between six to 12 weeks and cover such topics as Information and Communications Technology (ICT), the National Numeracy and Literacy Strategies, classroom management and an update on the National Curriculum.
Those who attend the courses will be able to claim a bursary of up to £150 per week and up to £150 per week towards the cost of childcare while they re-train.
"Former teachers appreciate the emotional rewards that teaching offers," added Mary Doherty.
"I hope they will look at these initiatives and the significant improvements taking place, including the increased salary scales, and better career prospects. There has never been a better time to return to the classroom."
