A Witham factory which makes food flavourings is to close with the loss of 36 jobs.

International Flavours and Fragrances will close its production facility at Colchester Road in December 2002 after a 90-day global review of the company.

The firm employs more than 500 people at its sites in Witham, Long Melford, and Walthamstow.

Mike Jackson, site manager at Witham and Long Melford, Suffolk, said: "What we did through the 90-day consultation was look at the opportunities of keeping the site open to see if there was any commercial justification for doing that."

The closure of the Witham facility, along with sites at Long Melford and Walthamstow, will be done in phases.

The first round of job losses will be in June 2002, final closure of production at the end of September 2002 and the site will close at the end of December 2002.
