A former Gazette man is set to cycle 124 miles to raise cash for cancer research - after getting the bike buzz by watching too much Tour de France on telly.

Jim Clayton is hoping to raise more than £500 for the Cancer Research Campaign by riding to his office in London's Docklands - and back again.

The 33-year-old father-of-one was inspired to take up the challenge as three people close to him have been hit by cancer in recent months - his wife's stepmother, his cousin and one of his best friends.

Mr Clayton, former Evening Gazette promotions boss, said: "It is a strange mix of watching too much Tour de France and doing something a bit silly.

"But there is also the serious side to it. You can go a long time without being affected by cancer - then three people I am close to have been.

"I kept thinking there must be something I can do.

"The cycle ride is another challenge. It is something else I have not done. I've cycled before, but nothing like this kind of distance."

To sponsor Mr Clayton call him on 07887 727426.
