Residents campaigning for speed humps on a Braintree estate are getting organised.

At a public meeting at Goldingham Hall last night (Tuesday), residents living near Skitts Hill agreed to form a tenants' group to push for speed humps.

About 45 people turned up at the meeting, worried about the number of speeding drivers on the estate all want Essex County Council to take action.

For many years, residents have been calling for traffic-calming measures and there are plans for a petition and a peaceful demonstration march around the estate.

Mother-of-four Michelle Beagrie, of Skitts Hill, said she has stopped her children from playing in the road for fear they will be hit by one of the cars.

She added: "The meeting went very well and we are now going to set up a group which will make things more organised. We will be having another meeting soon to decide what to do next."

She added: "We really do need to get something done, most of the people living on the estate are just waiting for a child to be killed."

A spokesman for the county council said a speed survey would be conducted on the estate to investigate the size of the problem.
