A 13-year-old girl suffered fatal head injuries while riding her horse near her home.
An inquest was opened and adjourned yesterday (Wednesday) into the death of Rebecca Carpenter, of Arbour Lane, Chelmsford, who died in Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, on July 31.
St Pancras Coroner's Court was told that Rebecca had mounted her horse while not wearing a hard hat. As a friend was passing the protective headgear to her, the horse bolted and the girl was thrown to the ground.
She was first taken to Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, suffering from head injuries and was then transferred for specialist treatment at Great Ormond Street, where she died later the same day.
St Pancras assistant deputy coroner, Dr William Ransom, adjourned the hearing to a date to be fixed pending further investigations.
