A new screening campaign to raise awareness about osteoporosis is being supported by Chelmsford Borough Council.

The council is planning to host regular osteoporosis testing sessions at the Civic Centre, starting on August 21. The sessions will be run by Osteoporosis Screening Services.

One on three women and one in 12 men will suffer a fracture due to osteoporosis in their lifetime. The condition is caused by the bones losing calcium and becoming brittle, but it is preventable and treatable.

The screening sessions at the Civic Centre will be carried out by using state of the art ultrasound equipment.

Bone density can be measured simply and painlessly, followed by information and guidelines on preventing or halting the condition.

Advice could include tips on diet or suggested exercise programmes. Follow up screening can be carried out to monitor the condition.

The cost of the screening is £47 for the first session and £27 for future follow up visits.
