Harwich's anticipated port expansion has won support from councillors.

After discussions with port bosses and environmental action groups, Harwich Town Council agreed to support the major development at Bathside Bay in principle.

Councillors gave their backing on Tuesday night on the understanding that port owners minimise the impact of the development on the town.

It also called for a close liaison between the port and the council.

The move comes after an independent survey revealed that 84 per cent of Harwich wanted the development.

Hutchison Ports, which owns Harwich International Port, revealed plans for a new container terminal last year, which would see the port double in size.

When complete, it will boast 1,400 metres of quay and is expected to provide at least 500 jobs.
