Pupils at Chelmsford's New Hall School had a devil of a time when authoress Fay Weldon came to visit.

Weldon, best known for her feminist classic The Lives and Loves of a She Devil, was at the school on Wednesday, to talk to pupils and sign books as part of the school's Festival of Literature and Arts.

Librarian at the school Anne Byatt, said: "It was brilliant, she was very charming to everybody.

"Everybody judges her on The Lives and Loves of a She Devil but she is a feminist and recently she has come to the church, she loves the language of the church and its community.

"I feel it is important for our girls to have some knowledge of 20th century writers and Fay Weldon is a great example."

The Festival of Literature and Arts has already seen a poetry workshop and some dramatic performances.

On Friday, Nick Arnold, author of the Horrible Science Series was to visit the school to give a talk.

Taking notes - author Fay Weldon meets New Hall School pupils Abbie Wiffen and Natasha Rughani.
