Police and Dunmow town council have joined forces to tackle the continuing problem of vandalism at recreational areas.

In the latest incidents nuts have been loosened on the children's play equipment including seats on swings designed for the disabled and very young.

"Vandalism that endangers the public must be combatted by the community," said town clerk, Owen Wilson.

He said: "In recent months damage to play equipment, seats, litter bins and buildings has escalated to a level where a co-ordinated campaign by the council and police with the co-operation of local schools and the general public has become necessary.

"Manpower and financial resource are being used in repairs due to vandalism rather than improving existing facilities and providing new ones.

"The public must be aware that if equipment is made unsafe by vandals and the repairs budget runs out, then the equipment will have to be removed until money becomes available."

Mr Owen added health and safety had to come first and measures being implemented or considered by the council and police include video surveillance, increased police foot patrols, additional lighting, publicity, rewards for information and liaison with schools.
