A military bomb disposal team was called to Stansted Airport to carry out a controlled explosion.
Normal security checks on freight were being carried out last night (Monday) when concern was raised over a package being handled by worldwide company Federal Express.
A police spokesman said security provisions were in place at the airport and the package appeared "very suspicious" when X-rayed.
The cargo area was evacuated and bomb disposal officers were called to examine the package. They carried out a controlled explosion at about 9pm.
The spokesman said the majority of people working at the cargo terminal were evacuated from the area. Disruption lasted about four hours, but flights were not affected.
The spokesman said the parcel was found to be scientific equipment and added: "The action reflects the good work of the security screening system at the airport."
A Stansted Airport spokesman said there was a higher state of security at the moment at the complex.
Police are asking people who may be sending parcels which could look suspicious under X-ray to contact the freight company in advance and make arrangements with them.
