One of Southend's historic landmark buildings is set for a new lease of life after a troubled 30-year history.

Hotelier Richard Perry was so impressed with the Royal Hotel when it hosted his engagement to 22-year-old Carey Martin, he has taken over the High Street venue and will reopen it next week.

Mr Perry, 38, already owns the Cobham Lodge Hotel in Cobham Road, Westcliff, and the Mill House Hotel at Langford, near Maldon.

Born in Southend, he lives in Thorpe Bay and believes he can make a success where others have failed.

He said: "We are planning to reopen the pub, the Royal Assembly Rooms and the Royal Cellar restaurant. I just cannot believe those who have had the Royal Hotel in recent years have not used the Assembly Rooms.

"It is a superb place for functions such as weddings. Even though we have not yet opened, I am already getting inquiries from people who are looking for venues in the town. This is a beautiful old building and it is time it was brought back to life.

"I am absolutely confident we will do well here, right in the centre of Southend.

"In the Assembly Rooms, people will be able to have a meal and look out over the estuary and we will also be opening up the cellar restaurant for those who want a more intimate atmosphere."

Chris Powell, 30, a well-known local promotor and DJ, is Mr Perry's joint licensee and will be showing his expertise on special weekend occasions.

The Royal Hotel was built at the end of the 18th century and continued to be a popular venue until the 1960s.

In 1970, major structural faults were discovered in the hotel, leading to the closure of all bedrooms and eventually the whole building.

After a period of uncertainty and threats of demolition, it was acquired by Southend Council and restored, just retaining the original pub and assembly rooms.
