A charity is still hopeful about raising funds - despite another setback.

The Salvation Army in Maldon has already had to close its Care and Share shop on Wednesdays until more volunteers are found.

Now a choral extravaganza has been cancelled because of groups pulling out at the last minute, said Capt Ian Young of the town branch.

The event was due to bring together the Youth Corps from across Essex for a musical performance on Saturday.

"It was a mass event with young people working through the day then putting on a programme to the public in the evening," he said.

Up to 100 young members were expected to attend, with a large audience also anticipated. But a choir and band cancelled only days before it was scheduled to go-ahead.

"You need a selection of groups to break up the programme, so we couldn't really go on," he added.

Funds are needed to restore the charity's hall in Wantz Road and it was hoped the choral event would have boosted the coffers.

But the charity has received some good news.

Calls from people interested in helping out at the High Street shop have been coming in.

"We are hopeful this will mean we can re-open on Wednesdays soon," added Capt Young.
