A new £500,000 national call centre opens its doors for business in Colchester yesterday (Wednesday).

Bunzl Vending Services's(BVS) new call centre, in Brunel Way, on the Severalls Industrial Estate, Colchester, will employ 20 communication specialists.

They will control the movement of 450 service and customer care staff, who are responsible for 20,000 hot and cold drink machines and food and can vendors across the country.

Howard Colliver, managing director of Bunzl Vending, said: "Our centre of excellence will dramatically improve Bunzl Vending's operational efficiency.

"We are aiming through a professional, structured and controlled approach to substantially raise our service levels, and consequent client satisfaction and retention, from a level which is already perhaps the best in the United Kingdom. This is only the start."

Existing customers include Lloyds TSB, Asda and Marks and Spencer.

Mr Colliver added: "This is only the start. When the call centre really develops we hope it will employ substantially more people from the Colchester area and contribute significantly to the local economy."
