Patioents seeking Bupa private healthcare checks will have to travel to Brentwood or Norwich from next month.

Colchester's Oaks Hospital will not be offering Bupa Wellness assessments from November 1, because the insurance giant is withdrawing its Health-screening franchise.

Last year Bupa tried to buy the Community Hospital Group (CHG), which runs the Oaks in Mile End Road and 20 other hospitals.

After months of uncertainty, Swedish healthcare company Capio AB took over CHG in May.

Adam Harridence of The Oaks said: "Bupa chose to remove its health-screening franchise due to a conflict of interest with Previa Occupational Health Services (POHS), another Capio-owned company.

"We would like to reiterate that both the breast clinic service, with consultants Fiona MacNeill and Simon Marsh, and the open access prostate screening service will not be affected by this closure.

Mr Harridence said people holding Bupa health insurance policies would still be able to use the hospital's inpatient and outpatient services.

There are currently no plans to replace the Wellness service.
