David Gildersleve of the Falcon Indoor Bowling Club in Chelmsford represented England for the first timelast weekendat the Victory Indoor Bowling Club in Portsmouth.

In a very tight triples match and with the scores level, everything depended on the last end of the game which went the way of the Jersey trio, who beat David's three by 14-13. The pairs turned out to be a real uphill battle for David and his partner, Ian Johnson.

They were matched against Jersey's John Hafey and Commonwealth Games gold medallist David Le Marquand. In spite of a valiant effort by the England men, they could not match Le Marquand's immaculate drawing skills and went down by 25 shots to 18.

In the singles David was drawn against John Hafey. The England man looked to bein linefor a huge defeat when he was 0-11 down.

He made an incredible recovery however, dug deep into his considerable skills and ran out an eventual winner by 21shots to 16.

The final outcome of the match was a 14 points to 8 win for England, and the sole Essex representative in the team had not disgraced himself on his international debut.
