Peter Taylor has turned down a return for a second spell at Southend United to manage Brighton and Hove Albion.

The former England Under-21 coach decided yesterday (Wednesday) to join the Second Division outfit instead of his former team.

Southend had put Taylor at the top of their list following the resignation last week of David Webb.

Taylor had also returned to Roots Hall at the request of caretaker manager Rob Newman last week.

But Taylor, who parted company with Premiership Leicester City recently, said after joining Brighton, he is aiming to take Brighton to a play-off position and into Division One next season.

The Blues have been handed a home draw against Bristol City in the second round of the LDV Vans Trophy to take place during the week commencing October 29.
