A heavily pregnant woman was today (Thursday) recovering in hospital after being assaulted by a burglar in her home.

The 27-year-old woman found the intruder in the house in Kiln Road, Benfleet. When she confronted him, he assaulted her, grabbed some of her property and ran off towards Coney Brook.

The woman was taken to Southend Hospital for treatment although her injuries are not thought to be serious.

Det Insp John Kreyling said: "This was a traumatic experience. Having been found in the house, the man didn't turn and run but assaulted her, even though he would have been aware she is heavily pregnant.

"He then stole property before escaping. I am obviously concerned for the wellbeing of mother and baby. It's imperative this man is caught."

He was aged around 25 with short, blond, mousey hair, unshaven and scruffy, and wearing a beige jacket.

Anyone who knows anything about the incident, which happened at 10.30am yesterday (Wednesday), should contact Benfleet police on 01268 756221 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111
