A young couple came within two feet of drowning after their car slid off the road and dangled precariously over a creek.

Police clung to the back of the Citroen Saxo - with the couple inside - to stop it moving following the accident in Wallasea Road, Rochford.

It is believed the car left the road as its driver negotiated a bend. Fire crews from Southend winched the stranded car to safety.

It was dark and had been raining, and firefighters said that if the car had slid further it probably would have rolled into the water.
