The Southend-bound carriageway of the A13 was closed for several hours on Thursday evening after two tipper lorries collided with each other.
The vehicles collided between the junction with the M25 and the Grays turnoff at just before 3pm, blocking both lanes and causing police to close the road while they were disentangled.
Three police cars from Laindon traffic police were called to marshal the queues of traffic. Neither driver is thought to have been badly injured.
PC Peter Harris, of Laindon traffic police, said: "The lorries were basically welded together."
