Southend Hockey Club experienced the highs and lows of competitive play during a weekend of mixed results.

The first team beat West Herts 3-2 last Saturday to push themselves into the top quarter of the Printwize South Division Two thanks to a brace from Christian Jenkins and a goal from Paul Somerfield.

However, last Sunday in a turbulent National Hockey Association Cup second round match, in which Jenkins and Alan Pearson scored, they lost 3-2 to St Neots. Having Jenkins and Gavin Cheesman sent off did not help the Southend cause.

Southend 2nd X1, with Micky Walsh helping himself to a four-goal haul for the second week running, won 6-2 against Marconi. Ray Trendell and Rob Debenham were also on target.

Superstitious Walsh puts his recent spate of goals down to coating the head of his stick with a leading brand of vegetable oil - captain Alan Pearson puts it down to solid teamwork.

Schoolboys Luke Danebrook, Chris Crowhurst and Stuart Jones all scored to held Southend 3rd draw 3-3 with Colchester.

The Ladies 1st and 2nd teams lost 3-0 and 4-0 to Waltham Forest and Wapping respectively.

Old Southendian drew 2-2 with Bury St Edmunds in the Printwize League Premier B Division with goals from Nick Chandler and Martin Webb.

It was a similar 2-2 scoreline for the 2nd X1, who met Harlow in Division 3 South-East while, in 5SE, the 3rd X1 drew 0-0 with Clacton 2nd. The 4th X1 lost for the first time this season when Witham 3rd thrashed them 5-0, while the 5ths drew 4-4 with East London 3rd.
