White-booted U's wingback Joe Keith was determined to make his mark when he appeared as a half-time substitute again Swindon on Tuesday night.

The Colchester wide man, who only hours before the match signed a new deal to keep him at Layer Road until July 2003, simply knew he had to make a big impact when he was thrust into the fray.

Keith helped his teammates to a 1-0 win in the first round of the LDV Vans Trophy.

The former West Ham defender said: "I borrowed the boots from a pal to put pressure on myself.

"When you see players out there wearing flashy boots you usually look upon them as big heads and hope they will fail. So anybody wearing white boots has to play well.

"It was great to get back into action and now I have signed a deal that will keep me at the club for the rest of this season and the next I can concentrate on my game.

"I'm glad it's all out of the way. It's great to be back and I want to be in contention for Cambridge on Saturday.

"Now we want to enjoy a long run in this competition. The lads that went to Wembley have been telling us about their experiences and now we want to go all the way to the final again."

"There's nothing in the Southern Section to frighten us." Find out more about Colchester United FC
