Damon Searle believes the continued mystery surrounding Southend United's next manager will spur Blues on to victory at York City.

The Seasiders are still searching for a successor to David Webb, who quit Roots Hall ten-days ago, and stand-in boss Rob Newman will again take charge at Bootham Crescent.

Newman is hoping to enhance his own chances of landing the Southend job permanently by completing a treble of caretaker wins against the Minstermen.

And Searle admitted the players would be desperate for another win as they are "performing for their futures" ahead of a new Shrimpers manager being appointed. Find out more about Southend United FC "We'd all like to see Rob get the job, but you never know who is watching from the stands and we are all playing to impress," said the defender.

"We've done really well over the last couple of games and there seems to be a lot more togetherness in the squad at the moment.

"The uncertainty has definitely given us a kick up the backside as we are effectively playing for our futures ahead of a new man coming in."

And Searle said he was confident Blues could continue their mini-revival at York tomorrow and close the gap on the promotion play-off places.

"We need to go to York confident in our ability to get another win," said the 29-year-old left-back.

"We've been scoring goals for fun over the last couple of games - eight in two matches - which to be honest isn't like us.

"And there's no reason why we can't beat York. Although, I don't think we can score four goals for the third game on the trot and I'll settle for a 1-0 victory."

Finally, Searle said Blues need to cut out conceding the cheap goals which have been haunting the Welshman and his fellow defenders in recent weeks. "We've been leaking a few sloppy goals recently and it needs to stop," he added.

"But they say attack is the best form of defence and we've compensated for our errors by scoring a few goals at the other end of the pitch."
