Resurfacing of the A12 started at Hatfield Peverel today causing major delays to rush hour motorists.
Bocking traffic police said there were hold ups all along the road stretching back to Witham for about a mile this morning.
The project is part of a rolling programme to replace worn out concrete sections of the A12 with surfaces that meet the Highways Agency quality and safety criteria.
Infrastructure for lighting the road is also being installed .
The section of road affected lies between the two Hatfield Peverel junctions, with lane closures and 40mph speed restrictions.
Delays are expected at peak periods well into the new year.
Originally scheduled to begin on October 6, the £6.3 million works have been slightly delayed for contractual reasons.
Highways Agency project manager Jamie Hassall said: "Everyone will benefit from the new surface.
"It will be safer and smoother for drivers and help cut noise for nearby residents."
