Rob Newman last night (Tuesday) began his managerial career by leading Southend United into battle at Scunthorpe.

The 37-year-old has been officially crowned as the Shrimpers' new boss - as predicted in the Evening Echo - and said he couldn't wait to get started at Glanford Park.

"I'm delighted that everything's been signed and sealed and I'm looking forward to getting stuck into the job," said Newman, who has agreed a two-year contract.

"I've enjoyed my time as caretaker manager over the past few weeks, but there's no substitute for the real thing and I'm grateful to the club for putting their faith in me. I was the same as a player and being a manager will not change a thing."

Newman was the fans' overall choice to replace former Seasiders chief David Webb, who he had served as assistant manager.

And the former Norwich and Bristol City defender, who has also played for Wigan Athletic and Motherwell, said he hoped to bring continuity to the club.

"I know the players already so I have the advantage of being able to get on with the job without having to assess people," said Newman, who has made 61 League appearances for Blues, scoring nine goals.

"I will bring continuity to the club, which will ensure we don't have to go through a time consuming transitional period.

"I start the job knowing exactly what the players here are capable of and with only a quarter of the season played promotion still has to be our priority.

"I believe we have a very good young squad in place and with two or three new additions in certain departments I'm confident we can have a successful year."
