Controversy over a traffic barrier has moved into high gear with the threat of legal action.

A residents' group has announced its intention to mount a court challenge to get the barrier in Brockley Grove, Hutton Mount scrapped.

Hutton Mount Limited claims the 600 households it represents on the estate have "private rights of way" over Brockley Grove which are blocked by the barrier erected on land owned by resident Thomas Candler.

The company has also expressed fears the barrier could hamper the work of the emergency services adding vital seconds to response times.

Earlier this month Brentwood Borough Council planning development control committee agreed the barrier should remain after being advised the section of road was privately owned and there were no public vehicular rights of way.

The barrier was paid for by Brockley Grove neighbours desperate to curb its use as a rat run.

But it has sparked vehement protests from motorists who are angry that it was allowed to remain despite 71 letters of objection and a 96 signature petition.
