A man was made homeless after a fire at his flat.

Firefighters went to the blaze in Groom Park, Clacton, at 2.20am today (Saturday).

A fire spokesman said the fire had started in the kitchen, and all of the flat had been damaged by smoke, while 20 per cent was damaged by fire.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and one hose reel dealt with the blaze.

It is thought the man got safely out of the flat and did not need rescuing.

However the spokesman said he was now homeless. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
