The man in charge of social services in Essex is to get an honorary doctorate.

Chelmsford's Anglia Polytechnic University (APU) has announced the last of six honorary awards to be presented at its October graduation ceremonies.

Michael Leadbetter, director of social services for Essex County Council, and Patrick Geoghegan, chief executive of the South Essex Mental Health and Community Care NHS Trust, will both receive honorary doctorates of the university.

The university said Mr Leadbetter was internationally recognised for his innovation and commitment within social services and is also the President of the Association of Directors of Social Services.

He has played a leading role in developing a partnership between APU and Essex Social Services and has encouraged research and innovation.

Patrick Geoghegan is a leading strategist in mental health and community services.

As well as being an NHS chief executive, Mr Geoghegan is also a fully-qualified nurse.

In 1994, he was awarded an MBA, and has maintained links with the university by contributing to courses, developing new schemes in his role as vice-chairman of the Essex Education Consortium.

Mr Leadbetter and Mr Geoghegan will receive their awards, on Saturday, at Chelmsford Cathedral.
