Southend Manor continued their run of shock successes in knockout competitions this season when they knocked Ryman League Third Division high-fliers Aveley out of the Essex Senior Cup.

Like their hosts, Foresters Essex Senior League Manor left some of their more experienced men on the sidelines for this second round clash which started 40 minutes late when it was discovered that the referee appointed to the game, Alex Berry, was holidaying in Crete.

One of the assistant referees due to officiate was also missing, but the action got underway when stand-in officials were found and Aaron Wright headed Aveley into a second minute lead.

Paul Taylor also used his head to finish off a Ben Coleman cross after 33 minutes and Phil Donelly grabbed the winner with a 15-yard effort into the roof of the net ten minutes into the second-half.

Aveley pushed hard for an equaliser late on, but Manor, thanks to a superb save from goalkeeper Ryan Karner to deny Wright in the dying minutes, held out for a deserved win which now sees them host Jewson League Maldon in round three.
