Archaeologists are carrying out an excavation at Colchester Castle before installing lights there.

The Castle used to have spotlights shining up at the building until the system was scrapped because of technical problems.

After a long search to find other ways of lighting the town's historic showpiece, a viable system has been found.

A new set of lights will be entrenched in the ground to show off the cultural treasure at night.

Before this is done, a team of archaeologists from Colchester Council will be looking to unearth hidden heritage.

Peter Berridge, Colchester museums' general manager, said: "They could turn up some very interesting things."

He added it was hoped the new lighting system would be in place for the Christmas open evening in December.
