Organisers have shelved an idea to turn the popular Orsett Show into a two-day event.

The show regularly notches up more than 10,000 visitors, but those behind the event would rather build on its one-day popularity rather than extend it.

Although the foot-and- mouth epidemic hit the show's cattle and sheep displays this year, the event, on September 1, proved a great success.

The Orsett Horticultural and Agricultural Society, held its annual general meeting at Orsett Hall, and considered whether next year's show should be a two-day event.

Show organiser Grahame Thomas said afterwards: "After all the members and helpers had been given the opportunity to express their views, it was agreed that the show should continue in the one-day format."

Mr Thomas added that the Orsett Show, which has records dating back to 1842, is seeking help with business sponsors and volunteers.

The 2002 Orsett Show will be held on Saturday, September 7, with the parade of heavy horses scheduled to travel around the Lakeside Shopping Centre a day earlier.
